Maidstone and Kent

Accountant in Maidstone, Kent

I’m Andrew. I run accounting and finance operations for businesses from Maidstone, and build the software that takes recurring work off their teams. My background is in heavy industry and ecommerce, so I know what owners need from their numbers: accurate books, returns filed on time and a clear view of cash. I’m an AAT-qualified accountant and Xero certified advisor, and the accounting fees are fixed and published.

Who I work with locally

  • Sole traders: bookkeeping in Xero, Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital updates.
  • Landlords: rental income and expenses kept digitally, ready for MTD quarterly updates.
  • Limited companies: monthly bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, year-end accounts and Corporation Tax.
  • Online sellers: Amazon, eBay, Shopify, TikTok Shop and Temu payouts reconciled to sales, fees and refunds.
  • Trades and CIS: CIS deductions matched to statements and job costs tracked. Subcontractors report gross income for MTD, before the deduction (details).
  • Car dealers: the VAT margin scheme, stock records and auction invoices from BCA and others (dealer accounting).

Bookkeeping in Maidstone

Every full-service package includes all your bank bookkeeping in Xero: each bank, card and wallet line matched and coded, and reconciled to the statement every month, so VAT returns and year-end start from figures that agree.

  • Purchase ledger. If you buy on credit terms, I enter each supplier invoice, match it to the payment and track who you owe. From £95 a month for up to 25 invoices.
  • Catch-up. Behind on the books? 50% of the monthly fee for each month of records.
  • Moving to Xero. Setup £99, or £199 to move from another system.

Example: a Bearsted sole trader with about 80 bank lines a month pays £69 a month for full service, including Self Assessment and MTD updates. Quarterly VAT returns add £25. Illustrative, not a client.

VAT-specific work, such as the margin scheme, auction invoices, OSS or the reverse charge, is covered on VAT accountant in Kent.

Making Tax Digital for Maidstone sole traders and landlords

MTD for Income Tax means keeping digital records and sending HMRC a quarterly update, followed by a final return after the tax year. It depends on qualifying income: turnover plus gross rent, before expenses.

MTD for Income Tax thresholds by start date
Start dateQualifying income overTax year tested
April 2026£50,0002024–25
April 2027£30,0002025–26
April 2028£20,0002026–27

For example, a landlord with two lets at £1,300 a month each receives £31,200 of rent a year. If that is the 2025–26 figure, it is over £30,000, so MTD applies from 6 April 2027. Setup is a fixed fee: MTD-ready in a week. Check where you stand with thresholds and start dates.

Questions

Do I need an accountant nearby?

Not necessarily. The work runs through Xero, email and video calls, so it is the same whether you are in Maidstone town centre or elsewhere in the UK. Being local helps with knowing the area: rents, trades and the dealers and auctions nearby.

How much does an accountant in Maidstone cost with you?

Fees are fixed and published. Full-service bookkeeping and year-end for a sole trader starts at £55 a month, and for a limited company at £119 a month. If you keep your own books, compliance-only starts at £25 a month. The full list is on the pricing page.

Do I need Making Tax Digital for my rental income or business?

From 6 April 2026 it applies if your combined self-employment and property income before expenses was over £50,000 in 2024–25. From April 2027 the test is over £30,000 in 2025–26, and from April 2028 over £20,000 in 2026–27.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes. I send the professional clearance request, collect your records and prior returns, and check the opening balances before the first month is closed.

Do you work with businesses outside Maidstone?

Yes. Clients in Bearsted, Aylesford, Kings Hill, Tonbridge and Medway are handled the same way as those in town, and the online setup works anywhere in the UK.
